Our hand scrapers are made for us in France. The 2 gooseneck scrapers have thicknesses of .40mm & 60mm catering for any scraper use. The convex/concave scrapers are .40mm & .60mm thick. They are hardened to 49-52 Rockwell to maintain a very sharp edge. Timbers that tear out are common in Australia. Mainly in patches, the tear out can be removed with a sharp hand scraper. Hand scrapers are indispensable for smoothing wood surfaces, removing marks left by planing and routing, cleaning glued joints and levelling uneven varnish coats.
Sharpened properly and burnished with an appropriate tool, they are capable of removing the finest shavings and leaving a smooth and precise surface finish. By varying the pressure, angle and curvature of the scraper, you can achieve superb results even against the grain (knotty wood, inlays, tear out etc.). We recommend using a fine-grain waterstone (5000 to 8000 grit) for finishing the cutting edge and a coarser stone (220 to 2000 grit) for squaring the edge prior to finishing to a fine polish. A block of square wood can be used to hold the scraper edge at 90 degrees to the sharpening stone. Remember, if your hand scrapers is producing powder, and not shavings, it is not sharp. Chris Schwarz made a great DVD purely on hand scrapers with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks.
This set of 4 hand scrapers, varying in thickness, will cover all scraping tasks. They come packaged in a rust resistant Cortex blue resealable bag. A universal sized high quality leather pouch, also made in France, is available with 4 compartments to store your hand scrapers.
